Basilica of Superga, Province of Turin

4.5
Explore the Basilica of Superga to discover the tombs of many princes and kings of the House of Savoy. The church you see here today is a result of a promise Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy made in September 1706. He climbed a hill and saw Turin besieged by Franco-Spanish forces. He swore that, in case of victory, he would have a monument built to the Virgin Mary on the very hill where he stood. Climb the church's spiral staircase for views the city and, on clear days, the Alps. Take a guided tour for access to special areas. • Unfortunately, visited on a foggy day that prevented the view of Turin, I was impressed by the majesty and history that encloses this basilica. The guided tour was very pleasant for the content and the sympathetic way in which the guide exhibited historical events.

  • Beautiful. You can see all of Turin from above, but they are renovating it so you can only climb on the dome and see the tombs of the Kings with guided tour.

  • You get a birds eye view of not only the city but the region. Great views of the mountains. We took a taxi up and then took the tram down to the bus stop down the street. From there the 61 bus takes you to the Po Bridge. The views from up here are OK, not as great as people explained. Locals told me the best view is to go up top at the Mole Antonelliana.
  • We only did a tour of the catacombs and loved it. Great history and lots to see. Approximately a 45 minute tour with a guide. Very happy we came. Also visited the memorial for the 1949 tragedy of the Torino FC football team.
