Asinara, Porto Torres

Try to spot the famous white donkeys at Asinara, a national park that comprises the island of Asinara and its coastal waters. Often called Devil's Island, this has served as a quarantine area, World War II prison camp, and one of the most important high-security prisons in Italy during the 1970s. Learn more about these periods at the Fornelli visitor center, and see the former prison. You can wander the island's rocky cliffs, wide bays, and beaches. Stroll through the small fishing village of Cala d'Oliva, and stop for lunch. Book your visit here through an agency, because only licensed boats may sail around the coast. Many of these also offer guided tours. Make Asinara a part of your Porto Torres vacation plans using our Porto Torres trip itinerary builder tool .

  • Starting from Porto Torres and buying tickets directly on the boat I visited the island of Asinara. With Chiara, passionate, competent and helpful guide we did the tour of the island in Jeep buying the excursion online. Evocative and exciting visit of the guesthouse, where a plaque recalls the presence in 1985 of magistrates Falcone and Borsellino intent on preparing the maxi trial in a protected place. My heart filled the sight of horses in the wild drinking and running free. Along the way you can see many donkeys, many of them albinos. It is possible to visit part of the prisons now decommissioned since 1997 of the island. Sorry about the lack of attention devoted to garbage collection. The tourist should have detailed information and strict rules to follow for disposal. Bars should not contribute to the sale of plastic bottles.

  • I saw the Island of Asinare in July 2019, Excursion organized egregiously with ferry, green train guide and first dish on board ship. I discovered the island in another guise, not only the sea of a thousand colors but also as a natural territory, full of history and culture, from prisons to medical observation camps for all travelers entering Italy potentially infected with problems that could cause epidemics.

  • Accessible only by little ferry, the a island is a protected land and marine reserve. You can visit it with a tour guide or yourself but only following all the restrictive rules of the Island to preserve the flora and fauna.
  • Stunning. Boat trip with futurismo. Excellent
