Abbazia Santa Maria di Morimondo, Morimondo

#1 of 165 in Historic Sites in Province of Milan
Church · Tourist Spot
The Cistercian abbey at Abbazia Santa Maria di Morimondo lies in peaceful, green surroundings. Founded in 1134 by a group of monks from Morimondo, the abbey’s life revolves around the central cloister. The door and arches of the façade contrast with the stark interior, where you can see a fresco by Bernardino Luini, a wooden choir from 1522, and a 15th-century crucifix. Learn about abbey life in the Middle Ages in the museum, which explores such topics as food, cooking, energy, water, and architecture over the history of the abbey.
