Abbazia Santa Maria di Morimondo, Morimondo

The Cistercian abbey at Abbazia Santa Maria di Morimondo lies in peaceful, green surroundings. Founded in 1134 by a group of monks from Morimondo, the abbey’s life revolves around the central cloister. The door and arches of the façade contrast with the stark interior, where you can see a fresco by Bernardino Luini, a wooden choir from 1522, and a 15th-century crucifix. Learn about abbey life in the Middle Ages in the museum, which explores such topics as food, cooking, energy, water, and architecture over the history of the abbey. • It deserves a careful view in order to appreciate well the monastic complex, and the environment in which it is inserted.

  • Taking advantage of the beautiful day today we visited this magnificent abbey that despite many vicissitudes and alternate events has preserved, along with the harmonious architectures of the origins, an immersive atmosphere and intense spirituality, which we I could fully appreciate it because there was hardly anyone this morning. Omit historical notes and detailed descriptions, easily available from various sources, but it should be remembered that its foundation-contemporary to that of the sister Abbey of Clairvaux in Milan (see review)-follows the settlement of some French monks arrived here in 1134-36 from Morimond, a locality on the Langres Plateau. To fascinate immediately is the church, entirely in brick outside and inside, of rare harmony and lightness despite the considerable dimensions. Its construction, after that of the monastery, was very troubled: in fact, it began in 1182 to conclude only in 1292 due to heated disputes with the local clergy. To welcome the visitor is the beautiful façade sailing with pronaos-only out of tune-added in the eighteenth century. The interior, Majestic and of great charm, has three naves divided by mighty pillars of different workmanship on which they rest, in pure Gothic style, pointed arches and vaults on a cruise. Among the works that it contains point out in a particular way: the fourteenth-century Acquasantiera (immediately to the right, entering), unfortunately deprived of decades of the statuette-stolen-carved by champion Bonino and depicting the Madonna and child; The fresco in the baptistery, referable to Aurelio Luini, son of Bernardino, depicting the baptism of Jesus and Saints Benedict and Bernard; The fresco at the end of the right nave, dated 1515 and attributed to Bernardino Luini, depicting the Madonna and child and the Ss. Benedetto and Bernardo; The very valuable wooden choir, completed in 1522 by the Carver Abbiatense Francesco Giramo, artist of school Bramantesca. Outside, near the left transept, is noteworthy "the Sun", bronze sculpture by Harry Rosenthal (1922-2017), identical to that entitled "The Light" installed in front of the Cascina Castello di Carpiano (see review). The church is open every day from 8.30 hours, while the visit of the remaining parts of the Abbey (cloister, Capitular Hall, etc.) follows other timetables and different modalities, which can be consulted on the website. In any case a place more than recommended.
