Just to the left of the Milan Cathedral, Rinascente Milano has been a favorite of Italian shoppers since 1887. It's the oldest department store in Italy, thriving until the World War I's resulting destruction and poverty and almost drove it out of business. Poet Gabriele d'Annunzio rescued it by rebranding it La Rinascente (the reborn), to symbolize the rebirth of Italy and the store. The name took on literal significance when a short circuit burned the building down on Christmas night 1918, only for it to be rebuilt. Now, you can explore six floors of brand-name fashion topped by a gourmet market and rooftop cafe with views of the cathedral.
