A work of art in itself, Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola resides in a spectacular 17th-century mansion, the former residence of the Grimaldi family nobility. A richly decorated exterior gives way to preserved, original pieces, including the furniture, curtains, porcelain, and silverware. The mansion also houses a prestigious art collection, including the works of famous Italian artists such as Giovanni Battista Carlone, Castello, Strozzi, Cambiaso, Parodi, Antonello da Messina, and Giordano. The art collection is housed over the two floors of the mansion. • Wonderful place. I went earlyish (like 9.30) and was the only one in the building. They don't allow you to roam by yourself (without the staff following you through the building) so you can either join a group or, when there aren't any others, you will have someone keeping an eye on you personally (but you can decide how fast and where you want to go). So recommend going early to avoid having to join a group. It felt kind of odd being followed around by a member of the staff though - it's not clear what the reason for this could be. Oh well, that's not the only time I've wondered about that in Italy.
  • Amazing palace, absolutely beautiful and worth visiting. You must tour the palace with a group at specific time slots each hour so look up in advance.
