Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno, Genoa

4.5
One of the largest cemeteries in Europe, Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno sprawls across a hillside and contains several important sculptures and graves. Among some of the notables buried here are Oscar Wilde's wife Constance Lloyd, Fabrizio De André, Ferruccio Parri, Giuseppe Mazzini, and Nino Bixio. You can find maps at the visitor’s center to navigate the area more easily, and booklets are also available to explain the statues and graves. Mosquitoes can be a problem here, so consider bringing bug spray. To find out how to plan a trip to Genoa, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • Staglieno is probably most of the most impressive Cemeteries in the World! It is located about 5 km outside the city centre. You will need at least two or three hours for Your visit here.  more »
  • I knew the cemetery only for fame given by the covers of Joy Division records, I admit I went mainly with that goal, given also my passion for music. After being more than 2h and seeing only part of the huge monumental complex as well as museum of the cemetery, I am convinced that I will return. I recommend it to everyone, it is fascinating in every respect, true reading the comments, that some areas are neglected (as you can read from some comments), but at the same time they only manage to enrich the charm altogether. A tip, do not go on too hot days, also given the size of the complex (there is a lot to walk) In my opinion it is far superior to Père-Lachaise as complex, richness of the funeral works and sensations it generates. Père-Lachaise only has the advantages of being in Paris and having more distinguished guests, but removed this Staglieno beats him across the board.

  • Absolutely amazing sculptures! The best I've ever seen yet (thanks ViasatHistory short series :) Some statues do look like they are alive (marble eye lashes, why not?). Indeed, some pieces could've been kept in better condition, yet it's an old and still functional cemetery with all burials and repairs going on. Free parking near the place. We've entered for free, though some say there's admittance fee.
  • Very impressive. Really fill of time death and glory. Maybie spend 3 -4 hr.s is enough... quite big space to see and look.
