Begun in the 13th century and mostly completed by the 15th, Rocca Sanvitale di Fontanellato was home of the descendants of the Count of Sanvitale until the 1930s. Now a museum, it also houses an optical chamber that uses mirrors and prisms to project a view of the town onto a wall. Traverse the moat to enter the fortress, which is furnished with furniture and paintings that span the 16th to 18th centuries. The castle-like building also houses a great masterpiece of the Italian Mannerist artist Parmigianino, a room painted with a depiction of the myth of Diana and Actaeon. Interesting castle with a full and water-filled moat. Not a lot to see internally but look for the forged steel bell pull on the first floor. It is modern but very cleverly done. The surrounding shops etc are worth exploring, nice ice cream and a couple of cafés.
