Magere Brug, Amsterdam

3.9
One of the most iconic drawbridges in a city of waterways, Magere Brug stretches over the Amstel River to help connect the city. Though the present structure wasn't built until 1934, its white wooden design replicates the historical bridge that proceeded it. Enjoy a stroll over the river and soak up the city center's bustling atmosphere. Use of the bridge is limited to pedestrians and cyclists; it opens several times a day to allow boats through along the river. Planning Amsterdam trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • About 30 years ago, when I first visited, a staff member who opened and closed the bridge stood on the resident bridge, and it was a sight to see the weight while balancing, but now, unfortunately, it opens and closes with automatic control. Amsterdam's most famous bridge is the Hane Bridge over the Amstel River.

  • There are two theories behind its name. One theory is that it was a very narrow bridge earlier (hence skinny) and was later widened. The other theory is that it connected the houses of two sisters on either side whose last name meant skinny. It is lit beautifully at night. One could go and spend a few moments with loved ones there.
  • It's beautiful at night especially when you take a boat tour post 9 pm. Amsterdam and boat rides are connected like body and soul. You need to take boat rides to see the city in different perspective in different time of the day. Skinny bridge shines like a sleek jewel.
