Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
For some of the finest views of the Provencal coast and countryside, hike uphill to Fort du Mont Alban. Constructed in the 1550s, the stone fortress once formed part of an extensive network designed to protect Nice from possible attacks from the sea. Today, the well-preserved remains of the imposing citadel serve as one of the region's major tourist attractions. A great day-trip idea for visitors staying in nearby Nice, the fortress offers unobstructed views from a height of more than 200 m (650 ft) above sea level. On a clear day you can see as far away as distant Corsica.
