The museum is widely considered one of the most important in Europe because it features works by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Manet, Cézanne, Corregio, El Greco, Rubens, Matisse, Picasso, Bacon, Rodin, and dozens of other masters. You will also find items from ancient Greece and Rome, as well as 50,000 coins, medals, and seals, and 8,000 works of graphic art. The museum's collection of Egyptian artifacts alone includes over 600 pieces, making it one of the best Egyptian collections in Europe.     While walking from the tourist office in Carcassonne to the medieval fortress, we spotted the lovely Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne in the Place Gambetta. Founded in 1856 in the old court house.....  more »

    Besides the permanent collection, there is currently an exhibition of contemporary art well worth a look. Don't be afraid to push the door open, upstairs.

    Some interesting pictures but not many. However, it is free! But they had very strange lighting that made some pictures almost impossible to see because the lights reflected off the painting.
