City of Popes
An ancient town center surrounded by medieval ramparts, Avignon is a major city of Provence and a Mediterranean city in the Vaucluse department on the left bank of the Rhône River. Often referred to as the City of Popes and packed with places to visit, Avignon is world famous for its annual theatre festival, held in the four weeks of July, when eclectic street performers, actors, and musicians fill the city. You'll find diverse shopping in the Place du Palais, but if you prefer a more authentic market where the locals shop, walk a short distance in any direction to the smaller shopping squares with much lower prices, such as Place Pie, a covered market which sells fresh produce, cheeses, wines, and country crafts. With more than 110 km (68 mi) of bike paths, you can see many attractions by renting a bicycle through the city's affordable Vélopop' program. Add Avignon and other destinations to your itinerary using our France trip builder, and learn about what to see, what to do, and where to stay.
