Pile Gate, Dubrovnik

4.3
Cross the stone bridge to Pile Gate, a grand entrance on the western wall of the city's Old Town. Below the bridge, notice the green space that once served as the city trench. Renaissance arches outflank the outer and inner gates. See the two statues of St. Blaise, the city's patron saint. The interior statue is the work of the well-known 20th-century Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Next to it, look for the old door, dating back to 1460. During the republican era, the city pulled up the drawbridge each night. Now, the gates of Dubrovnik are always open to visitors. • At "Pile Gate" It is always incredibly crowded. The tourist buses are outside and there are lots of passengers collected. Due to the congestion, it is difficult to estimate the port. At the east it is much quieter and entrance to the wall is also there.

  • If you walk slightly further away you can get great photos of the little yachts and the sailboats parked in the water.  more »

  • We were sent there by our grandsons who love Game of Thrones with express orders to photograph everything. I loved the different craft shops which were in the grounds. Bit expensive for got memorabilia but we bought it for them anyway. Lovely jewellery shops and handmade glass candle holders, also handmade pottery
  • From now on the Dubrovnik is my favourite city. You need to go there! It is beautiful city. I recommend go on the city walls - stunning views! I think the most important thing to visit. You can buy on internet the Dubrovnik card which include this attraction. Just remember on Monday all museums are closed.
